|Dalvík is the name of a large cove on the west side of the fjord Eyjafjörður, located where the valley Svarfaðardalur opens. Svarfaðardalur is surrounded by a ring of high clearly-defined mountain. Svarfaðardalur is a very fertile valley, which makes it one of the best agricultural areas in the country. In 1972, the marshes located where Svarfaðardalur meets the sea were declared a protected area. It contains varied plant and animal life, including about 30 kinds of birds, most of whom nest here. This is Iceland's oldest nature reserve. There has been fishing from Dalvík since the settlement age. These activities on the coast: fishing, fish curing, and the building of fishing huts and their occupation, are the beginnings of the fishing village which formed around the turn of the century and was given the name Dalvík. Life in Dalvík is similar to that of other fishing communities of similar size. In spite of long working hours, the citizens social life has always been lively. There are many active organizations. Foremost among them are the sports clubs, the oldest being the Svarfaðardalur Young Peoples' Society. The Ski Club has been very active in recent years and has built up a good skiing area on the slopes of the mountain Böggvisstaðafjall above the town. The golfclub Hamar has a nine hole golfcourse in Svarfaðardalur, about 7 km from Dalvík. The golf course is one of the northen most golfcourses in the world. It is located in the beautiful surrondings of the valley. The Dalvík Drama Society has been a feature of community life for many years, producing a play annually. In 1989 the town of Dalvík opened a historical and natural history museum, in order to mark the centenary of settlements. In this museum are things like Jóhanns giants things, a big polar bear and much more. If you are coming to Dalvík dont miss the museum.|
